PhD Position in Mathematics at the University of São Paulo, Institute of Mathematical Sciences and Computation
Field: Networks and Dynamical Systems - published November 2024

Dr. Eddie Nijholt at the University of São Paulo invites applications for a fully funded PhD position in Mathematics as part of his FAPESP funded project on Hidden Symmetries for Networks of Dynamical Systems. The details and requirements are described below. The successful candidate will receive full financial support, including return travel from their home country to Brazil. The position is for four years.

PhD Research Project
Title: Classifying Generic Bifurcation Scenarios for Networks
Location: São Carlos – São Paulo State, Brazil
Supervisor: Dr. Eddie Nijholt

Project Description and Requirements:
Networks encode the structure of individual units (nodes) and the dependencies between them. A central open question in the study of network dynamical systems concerns how this interaction structure shapes the resulting dynamical behavior, particularly bifurcation scenarios.
The PhD candidate will address these challenges by treating network structure and associated geometric features as exotic forms of symmetry. The project involves developing reduction techniques that respect these symmetries. A specific initial focus will be on deriving branching lemmas for network systems. The goal is to demonstrate that certain geometrical features, such as one-dimensional invariant spaces enforced by symmetry, lead to solution branches. Since many interaction structures exhibit forms of hidden symmetry, the project aims to develop branching lemmas and other bifurcation analysis tools tailored to the network setting.

The successful applicant must hold a Bachelor's degree in Mathematics or a related area, and possess a solid foundation in dynamical reduction techniques such as normal form theory, Lyapunov-Smith reduction, and center manifold reduction.

Application Process
Interested candidates should submit the following documents:
1. A detailed CV.
2. Two letters of recommendation from university professors.

Applications must be submitted via email to eddie.nijholt@gmail.com by January 20th, 2025 (Brazilian standard time). For additional information or inquiries, please contact the same email address.

PhD position in Mathematics of Spatial Networks - published June 2024

The aim of this fully funded PhD position is to develop the mathematical theory of spatial networks, and to explain why these networks exhibit specific emergent properties on a macro scale. Unlike conventional graphs, spatial networks exist within an embedding space, allowing us to consider well-defined scaling limits and to “zoom out,” viewing them as continua. Leveraging on the expertise of the network group in Utrecht, you will establish a framework for these limits and apply them to partial differential equations that arise. As such you will attempt to bridge the local topological constraints of networks with their global behaviour.

Keywords:  graphs, analysis, probability, partial differential equations

Apply before July 8. More information at: https://www.uu.nl/en/organisation/working-at-utrecht-university/jobs/phd-position-in-mathematics-of-spatial-networks
