PhD position at UU in Algebraic Geometry - published April 2023

Enumerative geometry is the field of algebraic geometry dealing with counting geometric objects satisfying constraints. So far, enumerative geometry largely concerned curve counting. This PhD position is funded by the ERC Consolidator Grant Surfaces on fourfolds on the enumerative geometry of surfaces on Calabi-Yau fourfolds and related subjects. This new field has unexpected connections with various areas of mathematics and physics, such as Hodge theory, singularity theory, representation theory, and string theory. Call for submission for the Best Thesis in Applied Math Award 2022

Graduates in applied mathematics and their supervisors are invited to submit high quality theses on any topic in the area of applied mathematics.

This year, there is a competition for BSc-graduates (HBO) and a competition for MSc-graduates.

Does your thesis comply with all of the below?

  1. The thesis was written as part of a master program at a Dutch university (WO) or a bachelor program at a university of applied sciences (HBO).
  2. The thesis has been written in close cooperation with an external party, like a company, a government institute, or a hospital.
  3. The thesis has a clear applied mathematical focus and must contain original theoretical and/or empirical work.
  4. The thesis was finalised (submitted and graded) in the period between April 30, 2021 and May 31, 2022.

In that case your thesis is eligible for the 2022 Best Thesis in Applied Math Award of the Innovation Committee of the Dutch Platform for Mathematics.

The deadline for submission is June 15th, 2022. Candidates should submit their thesis by emailing a PDF version of the thesis to the Dutch Platform for Mathematics (bureau@platformwiskunde.nl), together with the names of the external party and university involved and the name of the supervisor on behalf of the university.

The jury, consisting of members of the Innovation Committee of the Dutch Platform for Mathematics, will assess the theses and select three finalists for the MSc-prize and three finalists for the BSc-prize. The three finalists in each category will have to pitch their thesis during the Math Community Event in September or early October. During this event, the winner will be chosen by a jury of three top level mathematical professionals.

The author of the winning thesis in each of the two categories will receive an award and €350. The runners-up in each category will both receive €200. Expenses for the Math Community Event will be reimbursed for all three candidates.

Additional information on the process can be provided by the chairman of the Innovation Committee Mark Roest (innovatie@platformwiskunde.nl).
Winner of the 2021 MSc-award was Daniel Gamon. He wrote the thesis: “Continuous time control charts: generalisation and an application to the Dutch Arthroplasty register (LROI)”.
